oh man, have you guys seen this guy tim james' ads? he's running for governor in alabama. awkward phrasing, lots of walking, general ignorance, repeated assurances that he's a businessman, and the best political catchphrase ever, " . . . does it to you?"

this newest one is my favorite. it's a whole new level. "we've got three kids, how about you?" am i supposed to answer that? why is his wife so scared? what does being a businessman have to do with making sex offenders register every 90 days? isn't that kind of a larger-government approach? also won't that cost more money? and who are these straw men politicians concerned about inconveniencing sex offenders? that doesn't make sense to me . . . does it to you?

also, the library is very pretty. the atrium is the big showpiece, but i like the stacks, with their calm, easy lighting and big windows. i've been spending a lot of time in the third floor reference stacks for my classes. it's a nice place to be.

(although i hate the way the stairs are designed. function following very very far behind form.)

by the way, do you remember the film "city of angels?" the kind-of-not-really-remake of the wim wenders movie, with the goo goo dolls song that wouldn't go away? it's got a whole scene in that library!

bike directions on google maps! not perfect but pretty good. seems especially useful in combination with the terrain layer.

some things are a little odd. if you tell it you want to go to oakland from sf it suggests taking the ferry, but the times aren't incorporated. hopefully eventually the bart trains that allow bikes will be included. also all the offstreet paths in glen canyon, alamo square and other parks are included as bike paths.

an update on my last post . . . i'm listening to kqed's forum with michael "crazy dog" krasny, and they're talking about this issue. very interesting. the spokespeople in support of it say that there is a wave of violence in the haight (though crime levels are down) and residents are fearful to make complaints, so cops need a way to preemptively arrest criminal youth before they commit a crime. it's a pretty incredible argument. criminalizing something (that supporters admit isn't the real problem) to reduce crimes that are only peripherally related, if at all. crimes, by the way, which are already, by definition, illegal. we're assured that the cops will exercise discretion in only using this law against undesirables (as opposed to, say, well-dressed kids running a lemonade stand). but is that really how the laws are supposed to work? we're supposed to give the cops whatever constitutionally doubtful "tools" they request, so long as they pinky swear they won't use them against us "regular people?"

also, the callers, my lord. so many rich people in this city are under the impression that their share of property taxes entitles them to a representative share of influence in city policy.

have you sf people been following the sit/lie debate? pretty ridiculous. c.w. nevius (who does not live in the city) is leading a movement to make it illegal for people to sit on the ground, specifically in the haight.

anyway nevius is now saying 71% of san franciscans support a sit/lie law. his source? a san francisco chamber of commerce poll of 500 people. the article doesn't suggest that they hired a professional organization to conduct the polling. it doesn't even suggest that they didn't just poll their members. so all this really tells us is that a pro-business, anti-progressive organization supports a law that further criminalizes homeless people. big surprise. on the basis of this very, very, very questionable poll, nevius assures the board of supes that should they vote against a sit/lie law (as they will, thank god), they will face a double digit drop in support.

by the way, newsom says he decided to support the sit/lie law after he went with a walk with his kid on haight street (no he didn't, by the way) and saw a man sitting on the ground, smoking crack. is he under the impression that you can't smoke crack while standing up? maybe he should pretend to take a walk with his daughter near 16th and mission.

at the san francisco history center last week, i was looking through a book about films shot in san francisco. it mentioned that when sister act was filmed at st. paul's church near 30th and church streets in the early 90's, the filmmakers spread garbage around the streets and spraypainted the buildings to make it look like the upscale neighborhood was considerably rougher. for me, that was enough reason to watch the movie again. so i got some screenshots. if you're familiar with this neighborhood, it's kind of funny. also, did you know harvey keitel was in that movie?

Fox Nation of Idiots (wherein I bring you the best of the worst comments on the awful fox nation website) is back, with belated christmas ~~cheer~~ fury! What are the fine citizens in the fox nation upset about now? Christmas lights! It seems people are buying LED christmas lights instead of the old incandescent ones, because they use less energy and last longer. It's hard to find the incandescent strands for sale because no one wants to buy them. To most of us, this makes sense; a new, better technology has outmoded an earlier one. Capitalism wins the day! But in the fox nation, it's all part of Obama and Al Gore's gay plot to destroy America. Let's listen in . . .

I tried a strand of the LED's... ripped them off the tree and vowed to never buy them again. I hate flourecent lights - they emit dirty looking hazy light that looks cheap and non-traditional.

I am hording incandesced bulbs until the Government can be forced to get out of our way.

How's that Obama "freedom" working out for you liberal/socialists? You can't get the light bulbs you want, and next they'll tell which toilet paper you can have and how to use it. You feel "greener" now?
